I definitely like the Garth Nix world idea, and you'd be welcome to help out/join the campaign if it happens. You do have a point with the modern stuff. I haven't actually looked at anything D20 modern more than superbriefly. I'll keep an eye out for some books I can mooch or get cheap. Markos's the one into a post-apocalypse RPG, though.
